Chapter Eight

“Are you sure you’re doing okay?” Hillary asked, frowning at me across the table. I nodded.

“You’ve just seemed a little jittery since we left the house,” she reached over and squeezed my hand fondly, in that charming way she did, and I smiled and nodded. I hoped she wasn’t expecting much in the way of conversation with me because I wasn’t going to be able to come up with anything too convincing. Not knowing that Lauren was waiting just outside the restaurant, keeping an eye on us and that at any moment I could call her in if this started to go sideways.

“Honestly, I’m fine,” I promised her, squeezing her hand back. “I’m just glad to be out of the office for a while, that’s all.”

“Man, me too,” she agreed, letting her shoulders drop as she let out a long sigh. “It’s been crazy in there ever since… you know.”

“I do,” I agreed, and looked around the restaurant she had picked for us. It was the kind of place we could easily have flown under the radar if it hadn’t been for the police escort waiting outside. Not that she knew about that. Maybe, if I managed to clear her this evening, they could be our ride home.

“Frankie, I have something to admit to you,” she began suddenly, and I closed my mouth and stared at her, willing whatever it was that was about to come out of her mouth to clear her of any suspicion from the cops. I had been working with them for a full month now, and it was a complete mess, trying to balance my duties towards them without feeling like a complete and utter bitch for lying to Hillary for this long. I was a reporter, sure, and I knew how to use questions and conversations to get answers out of people, but Hillary had been an investigative journalist long before me and knew all the little tricks someone might use on her. She had given me a few funny looks when I casually asked her what she thought of the investigation.

“What is it?” I breathed, eyes wide. I had tried to tell the cops, time and time again, that the best way to get anything out of this woman was if she gave it up herself. Hillary was a closed book at the best of times, and if she had committed a crime that she didn’t want the rest of the world to know about, then you could be damn sure that the rest of the world never would. She had hidden out in the closet for long enough to know what keeping secrets felt like, and she could do it for eternity if she had to. But here, now – if she trusted me enough, she might tell me the truth. And while I knew it could change everything, I needed to know one way or another.

“You’ve been pulling away from me these last few weeks,” she remarked, slowly lifting her gaze to meet mine, and I felt a twinge of guilt as I thought about everything that had happened.
